A safe and confidential environment.
Therapy shouldn’t feel like a scary place. My aim is to create a safe space and a relatable approach to therapy.
That being said, the therapy I offer is practical and structured. My approach involves developing a plan to target the heart of the issue affecting your mental health. Depending on your condition, tasks will be set outside of the session for you to work on and implement.
Once we have set goals for our sessions we will work towards these together. My aim is to provide a safe space to ‘check in’ regarding other any aspects of your life you wish to discuss, however my approach is less free flowing than counselling.
Many people assume that seeing a therapist is like seeing a ‘shrink’ and that therapy is a place to talk about what is bothering them and have someone listen. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the main approach I use in therapy and this is slightly different.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is regarded a ‘psychological medicine’ and is recommended by the NICE guidelines for treating a range of depression and anxiety disorders. It is a practical approach and involves working alongside the therapist as a ‘guide’.
You get out of CBT as much as you put in - it does involve a lot of practical work and understanding so it is best for those who are ready and willing to commit to making changes in their life.
For those who are experiencing symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder following negative life events, I offer NET or DBR.
Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) is an evidence based approach to treating multiple traumatic events by ‘telling the story’ of the trauma in order to facilitate processing of the event in the brain.
Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) is a neuro-psychotherapeutic approach which aims to allieviate trauma by activating the brains natural healing systems to process shock in the nervous system.
Your first session will be a space where we can get to know one another and I can explain how I would use each therapeutic modality to support you.
